London mayor treats his office as an
unaccountable personal fief
We do not know whether the accusations levelled at Ken
Livingstone by MPs from both sides of the political spectrum are true or not.
But a more democratic way of government would avoid giving individual
politicians and offices too much power for too long (Financial Times, 5
Feb 2008)
The voters want a
revolution
says the maverick Labor MP Frank Field. He does not mean a bloody revolution
a la 1789 or 1917 but he says that taxpayers should be given a direct vote on
how well part of their taxes are being spent. He also says that Chief Constables
of Police are too remote for local people to hold to account. Instead their
posts should be put up of re-election (Daily Telegraph, 3 Jan 2008)
